SUMMARY:HIEDA/SACPA - Level 3 Certificate: Safeguarding for School Nurses and School Nurse DSLs
DESCRIPTION:Venue: Zoom (online) – seminar \nAudience \nAll clinical staff working with children\, young people and/or their parents/ carers and/or any adult who could potentially contribute to assessing\, planning\, intervening and/ or evaluating the needs of a child or young person and/or parenting capacity. \nCourse outline \nThis one-day certificate programme is based upon the learning outcomes for level 3 health workers detailed within the most recent Intercollegiate document 2019.  Content also links with Annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 detailing roles and responsibilities of Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads. \nCase study and practical learning examples are based on specific clinical practice examples and dilemmas and reference to specialist health evidence-base relevant to the role of the school nurse.  This certificate programme is suitable for school nurses working in a range of education settings including state\, independent\, international\, and boarding contexts. \nThe programme is co-facilitated by health and safeguarding practitioners and has been specifically developed to certificate school nurses for level 3 safeguarding for clinicians as well as providing certification for those school nurses who also carry out the role of Designated or Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead in education settings. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nLeading safeguarding in health: the roles and responsibilities of the school nurse and designated safeguarding lead\nRefresh of legal and regulatory frameworks\, principles\, and definitions\nSafer organisations and a culture of listening to children\nVulnerable groups and the impact of trauma\, SEND and vulnerability\nRefresh of traditional safeguarding signs and indicators and overview of specific contemporary safeguarding concerns such as e-safety\, FGM\, domestic abuse\, child-on-child\, exploitation etc.\nMulti-agency working with early help and statutory services\nKeeping records and information sharing\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nTo be able to identify\, drawing on professional and clinical expertise\, possible signs of sexual\, physical\, or emotional abuse\, or neglect\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, grooming and exploitation to support and/or commit acts of terrorism (known as radicalisation)\, FGM\, modern slavery\, gang and electronic media abuse using child and family-focused approaches.\nTo understand what constitutes child maltreatment including the effects of carer/ parental behaviour on children and young people.\nTo know how to undertake\, where appropriate\, a risk and harm assessment.\nTo know how to communicate effectively with children and young people\, and to know how to ensure that they have the opportunity to participate in decisions affecting them as appropriate to their age and ability.\nTo know how to contribute to\, and make considered judgements about how to act in order to safeguard/protect a child or young person\, including escalation as part of this process.\nTo know how to contribute to\, formulate and communicate effective management plans for children and young people who have been maltreated within a multidisciplinary approach and as related to role.\nTo be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues surrounding misdiagnosis in safeguarding/child protection.\nTo know how to appropriately contribute to inter-agency assessments by gathering and sharing information\, documenting concerns appropriately for safeguarding/ child protection and legal purposes\, seeking professional guidance in report writing where required.\nTo know how to participate in and chair peer review and multidisciplinary meetings as required\nTo be able to identify risk to the unborn child in the antenatal period as appropriate to role.\nTo know how to assess training requirements and contribute to departmental updates where relevant to role. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.

What is often neglected is the impact of allergies on mental health. This session will provide a brief overview of safe allergy management in education settings and share with delegates information on how living with an allergy\, allergies and indeed chronic illness\, can negatively impact mental health\, and how to offer some support. \n\nSpeaker: Sarah Knight\, Founder and CEO\, The Allergy Team\n\n16:00 \nConference close \n\nSpeakers: \nLisa Thomson\, Charlie Waller Trust \nLisa has had a long career in a variety of Mental Health settings within the NHS. She originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in 1990 and subsequently worked in inpatient and community settings with adults\, children\, young people and their families. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England. \n\nSkyler Moulder\, Lead Nurse\, The Leys School and Senior Nurse Advisor\, HIEDA \nSkyler did her Adult Nursing BSc at Kings College London in 2011 and went straight into community nursing. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started. \n\nSarah Knight\, Founder and CEO\, The Allergy Team \nSarah Knight is Founder and CEO of The Allergy Team\, an organisation which supports schools\, food businesses and families to manage food allergies. The company runs a programme for schools including training and consultancy to transform safety and inclusion. Before setting up The Allergy Team\, Sarah was a senior TV executive working on prime-time BBC shows including Your Home Made Perfect and the flagship consumer show\, Watchdog. Sarah has two children\, both with food allergies. \n\nVicki Cockman\, Director of Training and Consultancy\, MHFA England  \nVicki Cockman is the Director of Training and Consultancy at MHFA England\, with 15 years experience as a senior leader in both corporate and non-profit sectors. \nPassionate about fostering inclusive and supportive cultures\, Vicki works with organisations of all sectors and sizes to embed long-term solutions that prioritise employee wellbeing and sustainable success. With unrivalled expertise in workplace mental health\, she supports businesses to identify and address their employees’ mental health needs\, driving meaningful change. \n\nRuth-Ann Radlett\, Whole School Mental Health Lead & Deputy DSL\, Culford School \nRuth-Ann started teaching in 2008 through the Teach First programme\, spending five years in Moss Side\, Manchester\, where she taught English and was Head of Year 10/11 whilst completing an Educational Postgradute Diploma in Educational Leadership. She then moved to Kathmandu with her husband to teach internationally\, spending her second year on the Senior Leadership Team\, before moving back to the UK where she spent some time in Birmingham as DDSL and Head of Key Stage Three. Ruth-Ann joined Culford in September 2016 as an English Teacher\, and during her time at Culford she has been a Deputy Housemistress\, Head of English\, and is currently Whole School Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead and DDSL. In September she will begin as Assistant Head Safeguarding and Wellbeing. Ruth decompresses by riding her share horse\, Harry\, and walking Grunge the dog\, who she adopted from Kathmandu! \n\nKieran Jones\, Director of Boarding\, Oxford International College \nKieran Jones is the Director of Boarding at Oxford International College. With extensive experience across leading UK boarding schools\, Kieran brings a deep understanding of modern boarding practices. He is passionate about creating a nurturing\, inclusive\, and supportive environment that truly feels like a home away from home\, particularly for international students. \n  \n\n \nBen Stork\, Strength & Conditioning coach\, ACS International School Cobham \nBen has over 30 years experience as a fitness instructor\, working mainly with young athletes. He was fitness coach at Millwall FC for 7 years and warmed them up for the FA Cup final in 2004 against Manchester United. He has worked with students from dozens of schools\, and is currently the Strength & Conditioning coach at ACS International School Cobham. \nBen’s interest in teenage wellbeing began with his own daughter’s struggles\, which saw her spend 4 months as an in-patient with CAMHS. It led Ben to research extensively and engage with experts\, in order to be the best support he could be for her. \nWith a background based around injury prevention\, Ben took the same approach with mental health.
