After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). With nearly a decade in this role\, she has developed a good understanding of neurodiverse needs and takes a hands-on\, compassionate approach to student care. \nJill trained as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital\, London\, in the early 1990s\, just before the launch of Project 2000. Her early career included working in endocrinology and renal medicine before she became adventurous! She then worked as a first aider and camp manager in children’s holiday camps in France\, joining the medical team for Raleigh International\, and became a project manager for World Challenge\, leading student expeditions worldwide. She has also been part of the medical team for the Everest Marathon in Nepal and led canoeing trips down the Ganges in India. \nAfter moving to Guernsey\, Jill took on a unique nursing role at the Guernsey Cheshire Home\, where she led adaptive exercise programs for residents with disabilities. From tandem cycling with blind residents to facilitating marathons for wheelchair users\, she had to find creative ways to make movement and adventure accessible to all. \nSince returning to the UK\, Jill has been in her role at Bredon School\, where she combines her medical skills with a deep passion for student well-being. Although she does not consider herself an academic\, she is a strong advocate for lifelong learning\, adaptability\, and the power of hands-on experience. \nA relevant personal connection to her current engagement is that Jill’s 18-year-old son is also a type 1 diabetic\, diagnosed at the age of 14. In support of the diabetes community\, she recently ran the London Marathon to raise funds for Diabetes UK.

After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started.

After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started.

However\, staff CPD opportunities seldom focus on these key areas. \n As part of a refocus of the training available through the Abitas Group and Hieda\, we can now offer a standalone Professional Practice Certificate for school staff on medical matters. \nThis course will link professional practice with current research and best practice to provide a unique opportunity for non-registered medical staff\, whether working in relative isolation or as part of the medical team\, to develop their knowledge\, skills and practice across a wide range of the key current themes/topics most relevant to their role. In addition\, there will be a linked project which will provide the chance to focus on a specific aspect in more detail. \nThe course is tutor-led and will consist of three separate live online study days spread over a full academic year. The sessions on each study day will be a mixture of presentations often with an external expert\, and group discussions. \nStudy Days for This Module Are: \n\nDay 1:  February 5\, 2027\nDay 2:  March 11\, 2027\nDay 3:  March 22\, 2027\n\nTO BEGIN YOUR QUALIFICATION  CLICK HERE \nTimings for each study day – 10.00 to 15.45 \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe role of a medical co-ordinator in a school setting\nMedical issues in the wider context: inspection planning\, managing medicines\nWorking with children with ASD and ADHD\nCommon illnesses and infection control\nManaging common injuries\nDelivering health education in a school setting\nWorking with asthma anaphylaxis\nMental health risk assessment/working with a mental health lead/pastoral team\nPolicy writing\nManaging children from overseas with medical conditions\nWorking with external agencies\nCourse assignment and reflection.\n\nCourse assignment: \nThe course assignment provides course students with an opportunity to focus on a specific area of particular relevance to their school/role. This can range from ‘supporting a student with a complex medical condition; a review of the medical provision in the school; the management of medical records across a whole school; health promotion models; to a student guide to accessing specific support for an emotional health issue. \nThe purpose is for the delegate to explore and compare their practice to guidance and whether it meets the needs of the child. \nThe assignment will take the form of a 2\,000+/-10%  word written essay  which must be submitted by July 2027. These will be assessed by the course tutor and the results published/certificates issued in the early Autumn. \nLearning outcomes: \n\nTo gain confidence in the role of medical management\nTo evaluate and reflect on current practice with a view to improving standards of care\nTo understand and be aware of current guidance that influences the practice we deliver\nTo network and develop awareness of the support available\nTo be able to work within the guidance safely.\n\n\nSpeakers: \nSinead O’Grady\, Lead Nurse\, Harrow School \nSinead is an Advanced nurse practitioner with over 15 years of nursing experience across hepatology\, haematology and emergency medicine. She now specialises in school medicine and is the lead nurse at Harrow school medical centre. \nSinead’s aim is to improve the health literacy of her pupils and empower them to utilise the variety of health and wellbeing services available to them.
