DESCRIPTION:6 December 2022 – 22 March 2023\n  \nAudience: \n\nNon registered medical practitioners who have a responsibility for medical issues in the school setting and wish to gain a professional certificate in medical matters\n\n\nCourse outline: \nMedical conditions\, both physical and mental\, are often related and form a key part of the safeguarding and pastoral care framework within our schools. However\, staff CPD opportunities seldom focus on these key areas. As part of a refocus of the training available through Hieda\, we can now offer a stand-alone Professional Practice Certificate for school staff on medical matters. \nThis course will link professional practice with current research and best practice to provide a unique opportunity for non-registered medical staff\, whether working in relative isolation or as part of the medical team\, to development their knowledge\, skills and practice across a wide range of the key current themes/topics most relevant to their role. In addition\, there will be a linked project which will provide the chance to focus on a specific aspect in more detail. \nThe course is tutor led and will consist of three separate live online study days spread over a full academic year. The sessions on each study day will be a mixture of presentations often with an external expert\, and group discussions. \nStudy days for this module are: \n\nDay 1:  December 6\, 2022\nDay 2:  January 22\, 223\nDay 3:  March 22\, 2023\n\nTo begin your qualification in DECEMBER click here \n\nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe role of a medical co-ordinator in a school setting\nMedical issues in the wider context: inspection planning\, managing medicines\nWorking with children with ASD and ADHD\nCommon illnesses and infection control\nManaging common injuries\nDelivering health education in a school setting\nWorking with asthma anaphylaxis\nMental health risk assessment/working with a mental health lead/pastoral team\nPolicy writing\nManaging children from overseas with medical conditions\nWorking with external agencies\nCourse assignment and reflection.\n\n\nCourse assignment: \nThe course assignment provides course students with an opportunity to focus on a specific area of particular relevance to their school/role. This can range from ‘supporting a student with a complex medical condition; a review of the medical provision in the school; the management of medical records across a whole school; health promotion models; to a student guide to accessing specific support for an emotional health issue. \nThe purpose is for the delegate to explore and compare their practice to guidance and whether it meets the needs of the child. \nThe assignment will take the form of a 2\,000+/-10%  word written essay  which must be submitted by July 2023. What do your pupils know? Are they prepared? This 2-hour session can be shown to your sixth form students to enable them to think about caring for their ongoing health and wellbeing. As part of the healthy child program 5-19 we are asked to educate and prepare for these transition phases. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe\, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group. \n\nDan Richardson\, MSc\, SENr\n \nDan Richardson is a performance and health nutrition expert\, supporting schools and student athletes to develop and grow. He currently works with over 25 schools within the UK\, supporting both health and sports nutrition programmes. Previously\, he has worked as a nutritionist with professional teams such as Manchester City FC and Sale Sharks. He is also the nutrition columnist at The Hockey Paper providing nutrition advice to readers. The course is run by senior members of the BSA staff. \nDr Aric Sigman \nDr Sigman\, from the U.S.\, is a health education/PSHE lecturer to children\, parents and staff at schools\, and to medical schools and NHS doctors. He is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood\, co-author of 4 of its latest reports on mental health in childhood. He publishes medical papers on health and development subjects and addresses PSHE subjects including: screen time/dependence\, ‘soft’ drugs & vaping\, alcohol\, understanding boys\, sex and relationships\, body image\, and preventing mental health problems in children. Dr Sigman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology\, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society\, and a Chartered Scientist awarded by the Science Council. He is the author of five books on PSHE-related topics\, including Getting Physical\, which won The Times Educational Supplement’s Information Book Award. \nDr Jody Walshe\, HCPC Registered Educational and Child Psychologist and Author \nDr Jody Walshe is an Educational and Child Psychologist and a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council. After completing an English Literature degree at Cambridge University\, she achieved a second degree in Psychology whilst teaching and working in SEN provision. She then completed her doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology at the University of East London\, which explored self-harm in educational contexts.  Jody is experienced in contributing to the assessment and psychological treatment of developmental difficulties\, learning needs and child/adolescent mental health.  She is also a Consultant Psychologist\, providing consultations for foster carers and supervising social workers with the Compass Community as part of their REACH approach. She is a fully qualified Wellbeing Coach\, Sophrologist\, Hypnotherapist and Teen Yoga Teacher and incorporates all these skills to create effective and dynamic programmes for staff and pupils. \nIn addition\, Kate offers training in coaching and wellbeing skills for schools with a focus on enabling staff to skilfully and confidently coach others\, whilst also improving their own personal and professional relationships. Kate also trains pupils to acquire these skills so that an informed culture of coaching\, kindness and pastoral leadership is implemented across entire school communities. \nPrior to being a Wellbeing Coach and Consultant\, Kate worked for twelve years as a Housemistress for teenage boys and girls in three different schools: Millfield School\, Somerset; Aiglon College\, Switzerland; and Uppingham School\, Rutland. Erika has worked in boarding schools in the UK and Germany as a school nurse\, health and wellbeing manager and counsellor. Erika has delivered sex and relationship education in primary and secondary schools and served as a DSL and holds a diploma in counselling. \nErika currently works as the Boarding School Counsellor at Berlin Brandenburg International School as a member of the student support services team and leads their Student Ambassador programme. Erika is a mental health advocate and an Ambassador for Dorset Mind. \n\nWilliam Goldsmith\, Head\, St George’s School Windsor Castle \nWilliam Goldsmith has a career spanning almost twenty years in UK primary education and leadership. He is currently Head of St George’s School Windsor Castle\, having previously run St Leonards Junior School\, St Andrews\, where he embedded the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes\, as well as a sector-leading approach to outdoor learning. William is passionate about a skills and mindset based learning philosophy; has a background in emotional wellbeing and mental health; and strongly believes in the value of learning outside the classroom. She gained a BSc (Hons) from London South Bank University in Paediatric Intensive Care Nursing in 2004. She was a Practice Educator at GOSH before starting as a Nurse Specialist at Asthma UK. She is now an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at The Evelina London Children’s Hospital and is also a Non-Medical Prescriber. \nRebecca is the Senior Clinical Lead for the nursing team and regularly speaks at national study events and conferences. She is a Course Director for the Allergy Academy and organises national study events for allergy healthcare professionals across the country. \n\nJaheed Khan\, Consultant Ophthalmologist\, Moorfields Eye Hospital  \nMr Jaheed Khan is a NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and practices privately at Moorfields Private and Clinica London\, Harley Street\, London. \nHe graduated from the Royal Free Hospital and University College London Medical School in 1997. He completed primary ophthalmic training at St Thomas’ Hospital and was later awarded a medical doctorate (MD) for his scientific research into new treatments for diabetic maculopathy at Kings College London. He completed higher ophthalmic training at Moorfields Eye Hospital\, the Royal Free Hospital and the Western Eye Hospital. He has also contributed to the development of the latest treatments for retinal vein occlusion such as intravitreal ozurdex. By applying her interest in art and poetry\, Amelia utilised these passions as a cathartic tool for recovery and a means of communication with family and friends. Amelia’s practice combines endurance performance\, installation and spoken word in an attempt to visualise the chaos of the mind and to open up a discourse surrounding mental health in contemporary society. Often using delicate materials and repetitive motions\, Amelia’s work can take a metaphorical stance on the fragility and vulnerability of mental wellbeing. A prize winner at the Aon Community Art Awards 2019 and recently shortlisted for the 2020 Government Art Collection\, she hopes to continue supporting her contemporaries and engaging with the community through means of social art and performance. \n\n \nKatrin Viella\, Head of Training Academy – Govox Wellbeing \nKatrin is an experienced mental health consultant and senior mental health trainer with an academic background in business and clinical psychology. She initially started out in cross-cultural leadership development and then gained experience in the clinical field working with people with most complex and severe\, enduring mental illness. Combining her training background and clinical experience she then specialised in mental health training. She established and led a fully accredited Mental Health Training Academy for the charity ‘Mind’. Her training division delivered therapeutic counselling qualifications\, whole school approaches and whole organisation mental health programs in various organisations. Over the years Katrin has trained headmasters\, GPs\, A&E staff\, education professionals\, senior executives\, middle managers and staff across all sectors and different industries. This box set is suitable for all organisations who wish to further their knowledge with a view to supporting their employees within the work environment. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group. \n\nRebecca Batt\, Advanced Nurse Practitioner\, The Evelina London Children’s Hospital   \nRebecca qualified as an RGN/RSCN in 1993 from Sheffield School of Nursing. She spent ten years working in Paediatric Intensive Care at Great Ormond Street and Toronto Sick Children’s Hospital. She gained a BSc (Hons) from London South Bank University in Paediatric Intensive Care Nursing in 2004. She was a Practice Educator at GOSH before starting as a Nurse Specialist at Asthma UK. This led to an interest in Paediatric Allergy and she began her career in allergy in 2007 when she became a Paediatric Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialist at King’s College Hospital. She gained the MSc in Allergy from Imperial College\, London in 2011 with Distinction. She is now an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at The Evelina London Children’s Hospital and is also a Non-Medical Prescriber. \nRebecca is the Senior Clinical Lead for the nursing team and regularly speaks at national study events and conferences. She lectures at LSBU on the Advanced Nurse Practitioner Pathway and the Non-Medical Prescribing Course and on the Allergy MSc at Imperial College\, London. Since 2016 he has been medical director of Return2Play\, a sports medicine service that now works with over 40 schools. \nSam has been at the forefront of improving the management of concussion in amateur sport and in children. He is recognised as an expert in the area and has presented nationally and internationally on the topic. He is a passionate believer in the health and social benefits of sport and that by properly managing risk those benefits can continue to be enjoyed. \n  \n  \nDr Alex Maxwell  \nDr Alex Maxwell is a GP\, School doctor\, Sports doctor and Lifestyle Medic. He is the School doctor for Harrow School and Whitgift School and finds immense satisfaction in the varied challenges in these roles. His particular interests are sleep\, nutrition\, physical activity\, mental wellbeing and the psychology of health behaviour change. \nHis aim as a school doctor is to provide the framework for the child to leave school with the tools to manage their mental and physical health for the rest of their lives. \n  \n  \nLiz Robson\, MSc Physiotherapy\, BSc (Hons) Sports Science and Managing Director\, R&J Healthcare Ltd  \nQualified with a Masters in Physiotherapy in 2010 Liz has since been working with athletes\, sports people and the general population of all ages across a wide range of disciplines\, to help them become pain free and improve their sporting performance and activities of daily living. \nIn 2017 Liz Robson Set up R&J Healthcare after having worked as a physiotherapist and clinical manager for Total Rehab Solutions. She set this up with the view to using her sports background and exercise history to help people become painfree\, realise their own potential and improve their performance and activities of daily living. \nIn addition Liz is a strength and conditioning coach working at Westminster school and Harrow school. Jill’s change of direction into school nursing enabled her to rekindle her love of nursing by making a marked difference to the students in her care by reinventing the medical centre and its provision at CLC. She and her team are an integral part of the Pastoral team\, working with students\, staff and key stakeholders to ensure that the overall physical\, emotional and psychological wellbeing of each individual pupil is at the centre of all they do. In 2018 she won the National Association of Special Schools outstanding impact award for a suicidal and self-harm risk flow chart. Kate has worked with the office of the Chief Dentist to help design standards for dental inspections in special schools and speaks nationally about her areas of interest\, professional accountability\, and risk management. Having worked in maintained and independent fee-paying schools\, she now works at St. John’s Catholic Specialist School (for the deaf) in West Yorkshire. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRachel Hart\, Assistant Head Pastoral\, Roedean School \nRachel is currently Assistant Head: Pastoral at Roedean School in Brighton\, having previously worked as a Head of Year and DDSL at Caterham School in Surrey. Within her work\, Rachel leads on supporting pupils with eating disorders and has recently written articles for the Times Educational Supplement (TES) on this area. With extensive pastoral experience in the independent sector and boarding schools\, Rachel is passionate about supporting staff to create a consistent and replicable approach when dealing with eating disorders and mental health. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWendy Fowler\, Nursing Education Adviser\, NMC \nWendy Fowler joined the NMC in January 2021\, she trained in Royal London Hospital\, qualifying in 1984. She then progressed her career in a number of London hospitals in the field of trauma and orthopaedics. Wendy also worked as a trauma ward manager in Hertfordshire before moving to an education position at an acute NHS trust with roles including clinical skills trainer\, practice educator and pre–registration lead nurse \nWendy has gained a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences and a Post –Graduate Diploma in Higher Education. Wendy is combining her role here at the NMC with that of a volunteer vaccinator. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMelissa Clinton MCSP\, BSc Hons\, MSc \nMy career background was 15 years as a Physiotherapist. I had wonderful years working in elite sport with team such as Harlequins and the England Women’s Rugby Team as well as working at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Trust as Clinical Lead for Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy services. I began lecturing on the BSC Hons degree in Physiotherapy at Kings College London. After relocating to Dorset\, I started working at Canford School\, setting up the physiotherapy service and tutoring in a girls Boarding House. I have been at Canford 10 years. 2 years ago\, I was successful in being appointed as Head of Wellbeing. As part of this role\, I qualified as a Sleep Practitioner. My passion for educating people\, looking at holistic and preventative approaches is key to the wellbeing work we do.
