SUMMARY:Hieda - Transition to university: transferring support and records
DESCRIPTION:Date: 2 December 2022 \nTime: 10:00 – 12:00 \nVenue: Zoom (online) session to be recorded and available to purchase \n\nAudience  \n\nHealthcare professionals\, medical providers and those with a responsibility for caring for a young person with a medical condition in an educational setting transitioning to university \nYoung people moving on to university – this would be a suitable PHSE session\n\nCourse outline  \nThis course looks at the planning of a pupil moving to university from a secondary education establishment with a medical condition that requires support. What do your pupils know? Are they prepared? This 2-hour session can be shown to your sixth form students to enable them to think about caring for their ongoing health and wellbeing. As part of the healthy child program 5-19 we are asked to educate and prepare for these transition phases. We will look at when they need and how to engage with the right support. \nTraining topics will include:  \n\nPreparing the pupil: a guide to encouraging independence \nResearch your university \nOn arrival \nSupport during the university years \nEngaging with the university prior to starting\n\nLearning outcomes:  \n\nTo know how to support a student who wants to attend university with a medical condition \nTo be able to prepare them for the experience – encourage independence \n To understand what universities can offer\n\n\nTrainers:  \n \nJane Graham\, Director\, Hieda \nTrained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children\, Jane has over 30 years of nursing background\, Many of them in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU\, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilise and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \nShe went on to teach these skills to student nurses\, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe\, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group. \n\nDan Richardson\, MSc\, SENr\n \nDan Richardson is a performance and health nutrition expert\, supporting schools and student athletes to develop and grow. He currently works with over 25 schools within the UK\, supporting both health and sports nutrition programmes. Previously\, he has worked as a nutritionist with professional teams such as Manchester City FC and Sale Sharks. He is also the nutrition columnist at The Hockey Paper providing nutrition advice to readers. SUMMARY:Hieda - Certificate in Professional Practice\, Non-Healthcare Practitioners on Medical Matters
DESCRIPTION:6 December 2022 – 22 March 2023\n  \nAudience: \n\nNon registered medical practitioners who have a responsibility for medical issues in the school setting and wish to gain a professional certificate in medical matters\n\n\nCourse outline: \nMedical conditions\, both physical and mental\, are often related and form a key part of the safeguarding and pastoral care framework within our schools. However\, staff CPD opportunities seldom focus on these key areas. As part of a refocus of the training available through Hieda\, we can now offer a stand-alone Professional Practice Certificate for school staff on medical matters. \nThis course will link professional practice with current research and best practice to provide a unique opportunity for non-registered medical staff\, whether working in relative isolation or as part of the medical team\, to development their knowledge\, skills and practice across a wide range of the key current themes/topics most relevant to their role. In addition\, there will be a linked project which will provide the chance to focus on a specific aspect in more detail. \nThe course is tutor led and will consist of three separate live online study days spread over a full academic year. The sessions on each study day will be a mixture of presentations often with an external expert\, and group discussions. \nStudy days for this module are: \n\nDay 1:  December 6\, 2022\nDay 2:  January 22\, 223\nDay 3:  March 22\, 2023\n\nTo begin your qualification in DECEMBER click here \n\nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe role of a medical co-ordinator in a school setting\nMedical issues in the wider context: inspection planning\, managing medicines\nWorking with children with ASD and ADHD\nCommon illnesses and infection control\nManaging common injuries\nDelivering health education in a school setting\nWorking with asthma anaphylaxis\nMental health risk assessment/working with a mental health lead/pastoral team\nPolicy writing\nManaging children from overseas with medical conditions\nWorking with external agencies\nCourse assignment and reflection.\n\n\nCourse assignment: \nThe course assignment provides course students with an opportunity to focus on a specific area of particular relevance to their school/role. This can range from ‘supporting a student with a complex medical condition; a review of the medical provision in the school; the management of medical records across a whole school; health promotion models; to a student guide to accessing specific support for an emotional health issue. \nThe purpose is for the delegate to explore and compare their practice to guidance and whether it meets the needs of the child. \nThe assignment will take the form of a 2\,000+/-10%  word written essay  which must be submitted by July 2023.
