SUMMARY:Medical Assessments in Education Settings

Heath care promotion and identification of ill health is part of the role. This course discusses the benefits of carrying out medical assessments of pupils in the school setting. The health child program 5-19 discusses the guidance outlines for those in education settings to enable and support young people with their health and wellbeing enabling them to take ownership of their own medical issues\, stay healthy and develop a healthy lifestyle. This course reflects on how we can support this. \nTraining topics will include:  \n\nVision and hearing testing \nThe practical aspects of medicals in the school setting \nHistory taking \nHealth promotion\n\nLearning objectives: \n\nTo establish whether this is a service that can be provided by your school \nTo develop a knowledge of the importance of regular assessments \nTo learn skills that allow you to assess the health and wellbeing of a young person. \n\nTrainers:  \n \nJane Graham\, Director\, Hieda \nTrained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children\, Jane has over 30 years of nursing background\, Many of them in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU\, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilise and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \nShe went on to teach these skills to student nurses\, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe\, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group. \n\nDr Jaheed Khan  \nMr Jaheed Khan is a NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and practices privately at Moorfields Private and Clinica London\, Harley Street\, London. \nHe graduated from the Royal Free Hospital and University College London Medical School in 1997. He completed primary ophthalmic training at St Thomas’ Hospital and was later awarded a medical doctorate (MD) for his scientific research into new treatments for diabetic maculopathy at Kings College London. He completed higher ophthalmic training at Moorfields Eye Hospital\, the Royal Free Hospital and the Western Eye Hospital. He was then selected for advanced sub-specialist fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he developed expertise in cataract surgery and management of conditions affecting the retina which include diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration. \nHe has presented internationally and published widely on new medical retina imaging techniques and latest retinal treatments. He has also written three medical retina chapters in the award winning textbook ‘Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology’ cited as one of the 100 most important ophthalmic books of the 20th century. He has also contributed to the development of the latest treatments for retinal vein occlusion such as intravitreal ozurdex. He currently leads a new service at two sites that delivers intravitreal lucentis treatment for diabetic macular oedema. \nMr Khan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth)\, a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO)\, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and the European Society of Retinal Specialists (EURETINA). \nMr Khan is renowned for his teaching excellence and is a clinical supervisor for the London School of Ophthalmology with particular interests in developing teaching programmes for optometrists and nurses. \n\nDr Alex Maxwell  \nDr Alex Maxwell is a GP\, School doctor\, Sports doctor and Lifestyle Medic. He is the School doctor for Harrow School and Whitgift School and finds immense satisfaction in the varied challenges in these roles. Dr Lloyd has been a pioneering advocate for neurodiverse paradigm in health\, education and business in the UK.  The Foundation has been at the forefront of the Neurodiversity agenda in the UK and responsible for the award winning Neurodiversity Umbrella Project. \nDr Lloyd is the recipient several national awards and is co-author of several national reports on ADHD in the UK; A Lifetime Lost or a Lifetime Saved’ 2016\,; ‘Bridging the Gap’ published in 2017 focussing on transition from child to adult mental health services\, ‘Will the Doctor See me Now’\,( 2019) focussing on health inequalities in adult ADHD services in the UK & in 2021\, Dr Lloyd commissioned and co-authored ‘The National Expert Consensus Statement on Failures in National Health Services for Patients with ADHD’ in the Medical Journal\, ‘Frontiers in Psychiatry’ in March 2021. \n\nDr Scott Rowbotham\, Neurologist\, SR Physio \n\nJill Bennedik M.A.\, B.Phil.\, B.Ed.(Eng.)\, Dip. After completing an English Literature degree at Cambridge University\, she achieved a second degree in Psychology whilst teaching and working in SEN provision. She then completed her doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology at the University of East London\, which explored self-harm in educational contexts.  Jody is experienced in contributing to the assessment and psychological treatment of developmental difficulties\, learning needs and child/adolescent mental health.  She is also a Consultant Psychologist\, providing consultations for foster carers and supervising social workers with the Compass Community as part of their REACH approach. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She is a DSL for Safeguarding at St Teresa’s School where she currently is the Lead Nurse.
