SUMMARY:Hieda training - Bereavement and Breaking Bad News
DESCRIPTION:Date: 21 April 2023 \nTime: 09:30 – 12:30 \nVenue: Zoom (online) \n\nAudience  \n\nHealthcare professionals\, medical providers\, and those with a responsibility for wellbeing. \n\nCourse outline  \nAt certain times we may be involved in breaking bad news or dealing with someone who is newly bereaved. This course looks at the process and support available that could be utilised to help during this period. The holder will learn skills to be able to empathise with and manage the ongoing wellbeing of the affected person.  \nThe session will teach delegates how to have sensitive conversations that may well impact on how the affected person deal with their situation or loss. We will hear from expert speakers who will help is look at support strategies\, the language we use and a case study that will identify some of the considerations we may need to be aware of.Training topics will include:  \n\nSetting the scene preparing for the conversation  \nCommunication skills \nHow does a patient feel? \nRole play – a variety of scenarios will be utilised to reflect the candidates’ backgrounds on the day.\n\nLearning outcomes:  \n\nHave an awareness of the impact of bad news \nTo have techniques to deal with conversations sensitively and kindly \nTo have practiced delivering bad news.\n\nTrainer:  \nLee Glaser\, Director\, HIEDA \nLee has extensive experience in pastoral care. Prior to becoming Headmaster and CEO at Taunton School in Somerset he was the School’s Deputy Head which involved leading the pastoral team and being the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Outstanding support for student and staff wellbeing has always been at the heart of his approach and the School was recently shortlisted for a TES Award for excellence in this area. \nLee has always worked closely with the School’s medical team which provided excellent support to the community\, particularly during the COVID pandemic. He is excited to be supporting HIEDA members in delivering the highest quality of care in their own environments. \n\nPaula Talman\, Outreach Director\, ShawMind \nPaula is the Outreach Director at ShawMind a charity on a mission to improve mental health awareness. They are committed to educating individuals and organisations so they understand mental health & emotional wellbeing\, and how to manage them effectively to lead successful\, fulfilled lives’. \nPaula created a mental fitness\, school resource which supported over 500\,000 children during the pandemic. Paula is a registered nurse in both adult and paediatric nursing. She has a MSc in Nursing Science and over 25 years of experience in family centred health care. A leader in the provision of children’s mental health and wellbeing education\, former school inspector\, safeguarding consultant\, mental health first aid instructor and mindfulness teacher. 2 x innovation award winner and a Forbes featured Great British Entrepreneur 2021. \nPaula has a wealth of experience in child development and mental health within both the hospital and educational setting. Paula’s passion is to support children with their mental\, emotional\, physical and social development as they journey through life. Paula’s mission is to protect and improve the mental fitness and wellbeing of over 25 million children by 2025. \n\nTracey Boseley\, National Development Lead for the Education Sector at Child Bereavement UK \nTracey’s links with the education sector began early in her career as she developed an outreach programme for schools and universities. This led her to qualify as a teacher and she has taught across the primary phase. She specialised in supporting vulnerable pupils and their families\, particularly young people with autism and sensory processing disorder. In 2018\, Tracey joined Child Bereavement UK; her role includes raising the profile of bereavement across the education sector\, research projects\, supporting education professionals\, developing resources and content for training courses. She has also designed online resources for education professionals in collaboration with London Grid for Learning. \n  \n\nErika Crossley\, Boarding School Counsellor\, Berlin Brandenburg International School  \nErika Crossley holds a Master’s degree in clinical nurse leader from Xavier University in the United States and has worked in paediatric oncology and psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She has worked in boarding schools in the UK and Germany as a school nurse\, health and wellbeing manager and counsellor. Erika spent almost a decade working in boarding schools in the UK in both the state and private sector\, and travelled around the south-west delivering SRE education. She is also a senior accredited member of The National Counselling Society and The Association for Coaching. \nAfter graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy\, Lisa went on to work with adults to overcome addiction and mental health issues. Having experienced chronic ill health for many years\, Lisa developed a keen interest in brain health and the brain / mind/ body connection. Lisa was fascinated by how our minds can influence our wellbeing and vice versa. After overcoming her own health issues\, she then specialised in the field of chronic ill health and stress. Lisa went on to certify in Applied Neuroscience and Brain Health\, Applied Neuroscience and Coaching and Women’s Health and Neurobiology. \nShe also gained a NLP Practitioner Coaching Diploma and certified as a Life Coaching Practitioner\, Youth Coach\, NLP Master Practitioner\, Hypnotherapy Practitioner\, Mental Health First Aid and completed a BPS approved certificate in clinical supervision. The specific focus of her work addresses the mind-body connection and the impact our language (self-talk) and belief system has on all aspects of health and wellbeing as well as self-esteem and confidence. The principles of Neuroscience underpin the work Lisa does as she believes it is essential to educate people on how the brain works\, how to influence mindset and to understand neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to form and re-organise neural connections). By doing so\, this enables us to build resilience\, develop essential life skills and learn how to manage stress effectively. \nTogether with her business partner\, Veronika Chidemo – a Teacher and School Mental Health Leadership Consultant\, she co-founded HeadStrong Training in Education.
