SUMMARY:Hieda/BSA seminar - Managing medicines in house
DESCRIPTION:Audience\nHealthcare professionals\, medical providers and those with a responsibility for caring for medication administration in the education setting or workplace. \n  \nCourse outline\nManaging medicines is always important\, but perhaps never more so than when you are managing medicines in support of a child or young person. This seminar will support delegates in gaining a better understanding of medicines in schools and the legalities behind the correct management of these. \nIn order to best safeguarding pupils and their health\, it is important that boarding staff understand the guidance behind managing medicines in schools along with the different types of medicines and how they should be stored\, documented and managed within the school setting safely. This is important to reduce the risk of poor management of medical conditions. \nTraining topics will include\n\nMedication classifications – understanding the different medicines and medication that may be in school\nLegal issues – understanding the guidance and legal issues behind medicines management in school\nStorage of medicines – a closer look at how medicines should be stored in the Medical Centre and Boarding House\nTypes of medications – effects\, implications on handling and storage\, trips and self medication\nOverseas medication – a look at medicines from abroad\, trips and documents.\nAnaphylaxis and Asthma medications training.\n\n  \nLearning outcomes\n\nTo understand the law and legislation behind medicines management\nTo understand the types of medications\nTo feel confident in medications management and administration.\n\n  \nTrainer\n \nJane Graham\, Director\, Hieda\nTrained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children\, Jane has 31 years of nursing background; 17 of which is in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU\, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilize and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \nShe went on to teach these skills to student nurses\, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse.
