Course outline

This training session explores how health centre staff can effectively support students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Drawing on extensive school nursing experience in both clinical and independent school settings, the session will consider how SEND may present in health environments and how health centre teams can provide inclusive, accessible care.

Participants will explore practical strategies to support students with additional needs, improve communication, and work collaboratively with pastoral teams and SENCOs. The session will also highlight the important role of school health services in promoting student wellbeing and supporting the principles of the Healthy Child Programme within educational settings.

Training topics will include:

  • Understanding SEND and how it may present in a health centre setting
  • Communication and inclusive approaches when supporting students with SEND
  • Practical adjustments to ensure accessible and supportive health services
  • Working collaboratively with SENCOs, pastoral teams, and safeguarding leads

Learning outcomes:

  • Recognise how SEND may impact student health and wellbeing
  • Apply effective communication strategies when supporting students with SEND
  • Identify practical ways to make health centre services more inclusive

Trained at Great Ormond Street, Rosie made the move to the independent sector in 2006.  With an MA in Medical Ethics and Law and the Specialist Community Pubic Health Nurse qualification her passion remains promoting the Healthy Child Programme, and promoting the visibility of school nurses in the independent sector.
