Course outline

This course is aimed at Health centre, pastoral and first aider staff in schools and aims to equip delegates to have the knowledge and skills to safely assess, initially treat, and manage common minor injuries seen within school settings. A particular focus will be on using evidence based assessment tools for specific injuries, spotting red flags and having an understanding of when referral is needed and where to.

Training topics will include:

  • Initial assessment, history, and use of paediatric assessment tools.
  • Head Injury and concussion management – red flags, lates guidance, referral pathway, use of SCAT and SCOAT assessment tools.

Learning outcomes: 

  • Have awareness and understanding of importance of use of Assessment tools to thoroughly assess injury.
  • Be able to spot concerning red flag features of head injury, understand how to assess and use assessment tools for appropriate treatment and review.
  • Understand the need to consider spinal cord, eye, nose, and dental injury commonly related with head injury.

Trained at Great Ormond Street, Rosie made the move to the independent sector in 2006.  With an MA in Medical Ethics and Law and the Specialist Community Pubic Health Nurse qualification her passion remains promoting the Healthy Child Programme, and promoting the visibility of school nurses in the independent sector.
