Course outline
This course aims to provide an overview of key dermatological conditions commonly encountered in health and education settings. It will support professionals to develop confidence in recognising common skin conditions, understanding basic management principles, and identifying when referral or escalation is required. The session will also explore the impact of skin conditions on wellbeing, communication, and learning, with a focus on practical strategies to support individuals sensitively and effectively within educational environments.
Training topics will include:
- Skin structure and function
- Holistic skin assessment and recognising red flags
- Common dermatological conditions seen in practice
- Understanding and supporting acne treatments
- Understanding and supporting eczema treatments
- The psychosocial impact of skin conditions on young people and learning

Josephine began her nursing career in Dermatology at Kings College Hospital, London in 2011. During her time there she developed a broad knowledge in all areas of dermatology, including surgical and chronic wound care, topical treatments, paediatric dermatology, phototherapy, skin cancer as well as assisting with both traditional and Mohs’ surgery. She held the post of Nurse Specialist for Skin Cancer and Surgery before taking on the role of Senior Sister for the department. After starting a family Josephine spent 6 years running a private dermatology clinic in Harley Street and then some time working in dermatology insourcing before making the switch to school nursing in late 2024.
