Chief Executive, Mental Health Commission

The Mental Health Commission is an independent statutory agency established since 2002 under the provisions of the Mental Health Acts 2001-2018. The functions of the Mental Health Commission were extended by the Assisted Decision-Making Capacity Act 2015 (as amended).

The Chief Executive is responsible for the effective leadership and management of the overall strategic direction of the Mental Health Commission and the statutory responsibilities as set out in the Mental Health Acts and the Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a significant track record as an accomplished leader and senior manager in either the public or private sector, and have well developed strategic and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of good governance practice including possessing financial acumen and the ability to set business goals and priorities;
  • Demonstrate an in depth understanding of the challenges within the mental health sector and wider health system in Ireland;
  • Demonstrate an in depth understanding of the challenges relating to decision supports and the embedding of the new service in Irish society;
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to develop
  • effective internal and external working relationships and represent the Mental Health Commission in a number of fora and working groups, both nationally and internationally.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complex context for the MHC to have formative relationships with all stakeholders in health (including mental health) and decision support whilst maintaining its independence.
