Job Description

An outstanding opportunity has arisen to join the nursing/medical team at one of the leading preparatory schools in the country. Cheam, a wonderful co-educational prep school on the Berkshire/Hampshire border, is looking for a part-time School Nurse.

You will be required to work for 3 days per week including an occasional Saturday. The hours of work are 8am – 6pm on three days per week. This is a term time only role and you will therefore be required to work only during school terms totalling approximately 35 weeks per year.

The ideal person for this post will be someone who:-

  • Is a qualified nurse or similar, with relevant nursing experience
  • Enjoys working with children and is enthusiastic when interacting with young people
  • Has good organisational and administration skills
  • Is an excellent communicator
  • Is a team player who will help and support their fellow team members
  • Is kind and caring and considers the needs, health and happiness of pupils to be of paramount importance
  • Is confident and competent using IT

Nursing Duties

  • To be responsible for treating injuries and illness within the school in so far as it is within your jurisdiction and training, using outside medical authorities as appropriate
  • To provide first aid and medical care on the games field during matches and other fixtures
  • To help run the school surgery and administer medication safely as per protocols
  • To keep accurate records of medication administered and keep allergy, asthma and dietary action plans up to date
  • To monitor and care for any child who is sick at school
  • To help with Occupational Therapy exercises where possible
  • To promote the physical and mental health and well-being of all pupils
  • To assist in the control of outbreaks of infections and infestations. To advise staff, pupils and parents on the preventative measures to limit the spread of infection
  • To liaise with the appropriate agencies and ensure that support is given to pupils as needed
  • To escort pupils for medical visits, doctor’s appointments and hospital visits where appropriate
  • To work within codes of practice and professional guidelines
  • To exchange information with pupils, parents, nursing staff and school staff relating to pupil’s condition and test results. This may involve explaining complex conditions or sensitive patient information
  • To maintain accurate records and to ensure that all recommendations regarding referral and treatment are carried out and communicated to parents
