Course description
Following the introduction of Benedict’s Law in England, schools are facing increased expectations around the identification, prevention and management of allergy and anaphylaxis. But how does an Allergy Action Plan differ from an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP), and how do these fit within a school’s wider arrangements for supporting pupils with medical conditions?
This practical webinar explores the relationship between Allergy Action Plans, IHPs and whole-school medical management. Using allergy and anaphylaxis as a starting point, the session considers how the same principles can be applied to a wide range of medical conditions, including asthma, epilepsy, diabetes and complex healthcare needs.
The webinar will also consider the differing guidance and approaches across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, helping schools understand their responsibilities and develop effective, child-centred and sustainable arrangements for supporting pupils with healthcare needs.
Learning outcomes
- Explain the difference between an Allergy Action Plan, an Individual Healthcare Plan and a school’s wider medical conditions policy.
- Understand the implications of Benedict’s Law and the current allergy-safety framework in England.
- Identify how clinical information should be translated into practical arrangements for a child or young person within the school environment.
- Apply the principles to other medical conditions, including asthma, epilepsy, diabetes and complex healthcare needs.
- Recognise the importance of individualised planning for pupils with SEND, communication difficulties or multiple healthcare needs.
- Identify key considerations for medication, emergency treatment, staff training, trips, activities and residential settings.
- Compare the broad approaches across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Identify when an Individual Healthcare Plan should be reviewed or updated, including following incidents, changes in treatment or changes in the child’s circumstances.
- Use a practical framework to evaluate whether a healthcare plan is sufficiently clear, current and operationally safe.
