Course outline:

This webinar provides school-based health staff and other practitioners with up to date, practical guidance on recognising, assessing, and managing head injuries in children and young people. This session will cover immediate response, red flag symptoms, return-to-play/learn protocols, and communication with parents and external services.  

Content will be aligned with NICE guidelines and school specific considerations including safeguarding, boarding and out-of-hours care. 

Training topics will include: 

  • Common causes in school
  • Initial response/on site assessment
  • Red flag symptoms and escalation
  • Observation
  • Return to play/learn

Learning outcomes: 

  • Recognise common causes and presentations of head injury in school-aged children and young adults 
  • Apply immediate and appropriate first response, identify red flag symptoms requiring escalation and document observations 
  • Implement appropriate return to learn/play guidance and support the injured pupil

Rosie McManus, Nurse Advisor, HIEDA

Trained at Great Ormond Street, Rosie made the move to the independent sector in 2006.  With an MA in Medical Ethics and Law and the Specialist Community Pubic Health Nurse qualification her passion remains promoting the Healthy Child Programme, and promoting the visibility of school nurses in the independent sector.
