Supporting young people with reproductive health needs requires clarity, confidence and sensitivity. This session will explore contraception and pregnancy testing in a school/college, including the management of emergency contraception requests. The course will discuss the principles of good practice, confidentiality, consent and referral pathways, and will include case-based discussion and guidance for developing or reviewing internal school protocols.

This training aims to support school nurses, health staff and pastoral teams in responding confidently and appropriately to student needs while maintaining safeguarding and professional standards.

Training topics will include:

  • Contraception overview
  • Emergency contraception
  • Pregnancy testing requests and how to manage appropriately
  • Supporting students with empathy and professionalism
  • Signposting and resources. 

Learning outcomes:

  • A clear understanding of contraception types and suitability
  • Practical guidance for managing pregnancy testing requests
  • Confidence in signposting and supporting access to emergency contraception
  • Awareness of legal, ethical and safeguarding frameworks relevant to this area of healthcare.
