Course outline:

This interactive training session supports nurses and healthcare teams to effectively manage the medical onboarding of new pupils. With emphasis on clinical and pastoral care, the session will cover information gathering, triage and risk identification, developing individual care plans and working with other teams to share information safely and effectively.  

The session will include group discussion and opportunities to share good practice with particular relevance to boarding and international pupils, and those with complex medical needs.

Training topics will include:

  • Welcoming and inducting new pupils 
  • Collecting medical information 
  • Health assessments, risk identification and individual care plans 
  • Information sharing and safeguarding 

Learning outcomes:

  • Resources to review and strengthen new pupil medical processes 
  • Confidence in requirements for new pupil medical information 
  • Improved understanding of how to share health information appropriately and collaborate with the wider school to support new pupils.

Speaker:

Alice Beard, Lead Nurse, Sherborne Girls School 

With a diverse career in the NHS, Alice specialised in orthopaedics, progressing to the role of Ward Sister on the elective orthopaedic ward. She later moved into clinical site management, thriving in the fast-paced environment of an acute hospital where she ensured patients were allocated to the appropriate specialists and worked closely with multidisciplinary teams.

As her family grew, Alice transitioned into practice nursing before joining Sherborne Girls as part of the nursing team. She advanced to Health Centre Manager, and her role has since evolved into that of Health & Wellbeing Lead. In this capacity, she focuses on promoting both physical and mental health, empowering students to understand their bodies, build resilience, and develop lifelong healthy habits.

Alice is passionate about supporting young women through their formative years, helping them grow into confident, well-rounded individuals. Her role enables her to combine extensive clinical expertise with a holistic approach to student wellbeing.
