Asthma and anaphylaxis management in the workplace

Audience 

  • Healthcare professionals, medical providers, and those with a responsibility for caring for a person with a chronic medical condition in an educational setting or workplace. 

Course outline 

This course is designed to inform and educate people who are supporting others with their asthma or anaphylaxis either in the education setting or in the workplace. It will discuss the latest statistics, management and support strategies for these conditions.

Training topics will include: 

  • What is asthma? The practicalities of asthma care in the workplace 
  • Asthma management, Inhalers. 
  • Updates on anaphylaxis, care in the workplace 
  • The practicalities of management in the workplace 

 Learning outcomes: 

  • To understand the changes that occur in the body when these conditions are present 
  • To have an awareness of treatment and management 
  • To be able to assess and manage an asthma or anaphylactic attack. 

Speakers: 

Jane Graham, Director, Hieda

Trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Jane has over 30 years of nursing background, Many of them in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilise and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation, all medical conditions, and trauma.

She went on to teach these skills to student nurses, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group.


Sarah Baker Head of Health Policy and Developments Anaphylaxis UK

Sarah is a health professional with over 40 years of experience working in the NHS as a Children’s Nurse, Health Visitor and latterly as an Executive Director in Community Health Trusts.

As Head of Health Policy and Developments Sarah works focuses on working with health partners ensuring Anaphylaxis UK provides the most up to date and clinically sound information to the allergic community.

Sarah brings a personal perspective of allergies to Anaphylaxis UK as she has multiple food allergies and carries adrenaline, which enables her to appreciate the physical, economic and psychological aspects of serious allergy and anaphylaxis for both children and their families.


Cherry Hagger, Food Allergy Awareness Officer, Allergy UK

Cherry’s role at Allergy UK pulls together her considerable knowledge and experience across 3 diverse but complementary sectors over the past 30 years. After careers in hospitality and banking, she trained as a dietitian where she developed an interest in allergy. She has a love of science communication with extensive training experience both as a facilitator and developer for UK and global audiences in academia, corporate, public and charity sectors. Her skills and insight into the competing demands in business is being utilised to develop innovative allergy training for public and private sector food businesses & schools. Working for the government through the FSA Food Hypersensitivity group, various APPGs and the food industry; she aims to improve transparency of allergens to consumers and promote best practices to managing allergy risk.
