SRE, contraception and PSHE

Audience

Healthcare professionals, medical providers who have a responsibility of teaching PSHE / SRE in the education setting, and any other practitioners who are non-teachers who have responsibility for this training.

 

Course outline

The ‘how to’ guide for teaching PSHE and SRE, this course helps the holder learn about and develop skills to teach effective PSHE subjects including SRE in the education setting. It addresses primary and secondary lessons, explore topics and resources helping the holder to deliver up to date and meaningful PSHE education.

 

Training topics will include

  • Contraception choices – understanding what is out there
  • What to teach at what age
  • Planning your involvement in teaching health-related topics
  • Girls vs boys
  • LGBTQ+
  • Consent
  • Resources.

 

Learning outcomes

  • To learn a wide range of strategies to teach PSHE / SRE
  • To be confident to teach different age groups, genders and ability
  • To have the resources to support teaching.

 

Trainer

Jane Graham, Director, Hieda
Trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, Jane has 31 years of nursing background; 17 of which is in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilize and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation, all medical conditions, and trauma.

She went on to teach these skills to student nurses, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe, an awarding body approved by the HSE.

 

Jonny Hunt, Sex Education (SRE) Consultant
Jonny is an independent Sex Education (SRE) consultant, working face-to-face with children and young people from the age of four years upwards, delivering workshops and writing educational packages, as well as training the professionals that work with them. He specialises in delivering inclusive SRE, with a sex-positive approach, encouraging both adults and young people to explore their attitudes and values to sex and relationships. Jonny considers himself privileged to be able to talk to young people and help to shape their views and expectations when it comes to sex and relationships.
