Course outline

This webinar will explore the principles and practical application of Gillick competence and medical confidentiality in UK education settings. Designed for school nurses, health practitioners, and pastoral/safeguarding leads, the session will clarify legal frameworks, discuss professional responsibilities, and how to assess capacity, share information appropriately and work collaboratively while maintaining professional and ethical boundaries.

Training topics include:

  • Introduction to Gillick competence and Fraser guidelines, and assessing competence 
  • Medical confidentiality in schools 
  • Information sharing and safeguarding 

Learning outcomes:

  • Greater understanding of Gillick competence and its relevance to education settings 
  • Improved knowledge of information sharing and medical confidentiality to ensure the needs of children and young people are met, including confidentiality.
