Job Description

2 years FTC available immediately

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 23-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

Offering oncology nursing care to cancer patients, you will conduct a pre-chemotherapy assessment evaluation on the day of admission to the chemotherapy day unit and maintain safe administration of chemotherapy and supportive drugs. You will give health education to the patients and their families on recommended treatment regimen, helping with the chemotherapy manufacturing process in the absence of the pharmacist.

You must conduct a patient assessment before each cycle of chemotherapy and interpret blood results, making sure that patients meet criteria as per treatment protocols. You must be able to quickly identify and report adverse reactions with follow-up care during and on completion of treatment. You should identify patients in need of Doctor’s consultation and promptly communicate with the patients and Doctor prior to the oncology clinic date.

Ensuring patients’ follow-up CT scans, scopes and blood tests are done as per schedule from the Oncologist, you will be on call outside of normal working hours if patients encounter complications during treatment. Home visits may be required for those unable to attend the Chemo Unit, so a valid driving licence will be essential.

A Registered Nurse at degree level with SACT safe handling and administration (UKON Certified or Equivalent qualification and certification), you have experience in SACT handling and administration and of analysing and interpreting information.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
