About the Organisation:

Public Health Scotland (PHS) is a new organisation between the Scottish Government and Local Government, working in partnership, to provide leadership to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland. PHS launched 1st April 2020 with the formal status of a National Special Health Board employing around 1100 people, and with an annual budget of around £60 million, PHS will provide authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland. It will lead the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and will contribute to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.

This is a joint post between Public Health Scotland and NHS Highland. The substantive employer will be Public Health Scotland, with an SLA with NHS Highland. There will be joint agreement of objectives and job planning between PHS and NHS Highland.

The work portfolio within NHS Highland is negotiable, but likely to focus on healthcare public health, and the base for work could be either Inverness or Helensburgh.

The post is half time with NHS Highland, but out of this time 1 PA is reserved for work with the Epidemiology Group at the University of Aberdeen Epidemiology, which is part of the Aberdeen Centre for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Health.

The post:

We are looking for a Consultant in Public Health / Public Health Medicine to provide clinical and public health leadership in relation to the specific areas of healthcare public health with a focus on musculoskeletal disorders and injuries to enable policy and strategy creation for the delivery of key public health goals.

You will be joining teams embedded within the NHS, but working closely with Community Planning Partnerships, Local Authority, Integrated Health and Social Care Partnerships, third sector, resilience partnerships and others.

You will be focussed on transforming Scotland’s public health system, through effective working relationships with stakeholders such as NHS Scotland, Scottish Government and partner organisations.

The candidate:

The post holder must be registered on the Specialist Register of the General Medical/Dental Council in Public Health or on the UK Public Health (Specialist) Register; and be Competent Person under the provision of the Public Health Act (Scotland) 2008.

The post will report directly to the PHS Head of Clinical and Public Health Intelligence & Research.

Candidates must have current NMC/GMC/GDC/HCPC registration at the time of applying.

There will be an expectation for weekend and/or out of hours working for NHS Highland.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG/Standard Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
