About us

If you live here, work here or just visit, you will already know Reading is a great place and at Brighter Futures for Children (BFfC) we’re dedicated to making it even better. Key to this is ensuring our workforce is equipped for the challenge – this is where you come in.

Reading/BFfC is proud to be one of the first trailblazer sites for the Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) and expanding into a second team. MHST delivers evidence-based interventions aimed at improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young, people by either working directly with them or with their parents/carers.

About the roles

Due to career progression within the team, we have both part-time and full-time positions available. Please state in your supporting statement if you are interested in the full time or part time role.

In line with the Government’s priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) / Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people in educational settings.

EMHP/CWPs play a key role as members of the Mental Health Support Teams. The role will include, although not limited to, completing assessments to inform subsequent intervention(s) and involves working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers to support self-management of mild to moderate mental health needs through targeted and evidence-based interventions. Applicants will also be expected to work with colleagues to provide better access to specialist mental health services and support referrals where required.

Successful applicants will be expected to manage their allocated caseload. They will be expected to prepare and present caseload information at regular supervision sessions.

About you

Applicants should be enthusiastic and committed to promoting and supporting wellbeing and mental health. Applicants must have completed the ‘Education Mental Health Practitioner’ or ‘Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner’ course. Previous experience of working with children and/or young people within education settings is desirable but not essential.

Our offer

We offer a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition are strongly encouraged, and you’ll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.

A competitive salary alongside a range of benefits including:

  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • 25 days holiday plus public holidays (rising up to 32 days after 10 years of continuous service)
  • Discounted Childcare Scheme (onsite Nursery)
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • A range of local discounts
