Job Description

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG), Directorate of Health & Social Services (DHSS) are looking for an experienced Hospital Manager, who can draw on their expertise in managing all aspects of a multidiscipline; GP-led secondary healthcare setting, in a remote and challenging environment – ensuring it runs as efficiently as possible whilst maintaining the highest standards of quality, professional standards and business performance targets.

The Role

As a vital member of the DHSS Senior Management Team (SMT), the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of all strategic and operational management for the entirety of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) based in Stanley, Falkland Islands.

Reporting to the Director of Health and Social Services and working closely with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nursing Officer, the postholder will be responsible for managing key non-nursing and non-medical operational services in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) i.e. all services/Departments required to support In-patient & Out-patient Secondary Care and Primary Care which includes pathology, pharmacy, allied health professionals, administrative and clerical support and hard and soft facilities. The post holder also deputises for the Director of Health and Social Services as required

You will monitor the operational delivery of the Hospital, ensuring all staff are supported and always promoting safe and caring practice. You will be the focal point of all complaints and compliments, across the hospital’s remit.

Your team will be extremely important too, looking to provide inspirational leadership and daily management. Working alongside the clinical services leads (Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Dental Officer) as well as soft facilities and estates management leads, you will undertake regular staff recruitment, embedding an open culture to empower your staff to be the best team possible, always looking to demonstrate our values of being Proud, Supportive and Caring.

Working in conjunction with the Director, Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Nursing Officer, Senior Dental Officer and direct peers; including the Care Home Manager (Tussac House), this key post must ensure the delivery and continuous development of efficient and effective patient care.

It is a challenging post and the postholder will need to be able to deal with changing and, at times, conflicting priorities due to the competing demands and pressures of the service.  Engaging with UK Government and FIG Officials on a regular basis, as well as being comfortable with forming and maintaining relationships with key partners across the world, including Chile, Uruguay, other UK Overseas Territories and UK MOD (who make up 1/3 of the population of the Falkland Islands)

Although not a directly service user/patient facing role, the applicant will still be working across the site and so must agree to maintain the strictest standards of patient confidentiality including signing the Directorate code of confidentiality; and promoting best practice.

The Person

  • Well Educated to first degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant Health field, or demonstrable evidence of equivalent work experience operating at this level.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ recent, successful operational experience running a hospital or a comparable level of senior management experience running multi-disciplinary teams at a similar level in an associated, relevant field.
  • At least 5+ years demonstrable effective leadership/management experience; ideally gained through hospital management roles in the UK or similar.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with senior clinicians and multi-disciplinary leadership.
  • Ability to demonstrate a strong knowledge of the requirements of the fundamental regulations within a healthcare setting
  • Level 3 Safeguarding Certification or ability to complete upon appointment
  • Formal Project Management Qualifications are Desirable
  • Able to demonstrate flexible and personable management and communication skills necessary to lead and support the team
  • Flexible approach to work as there is a requirement to be on-call on alternate
  • A true understanding of ‘one-team’ ethos Be a consummate professional in all environs; through leadership of the team, management of the administrative functions and as a key member of the Directorate of Health and Social Services, Senior Management Team.
  • Must uphold the values and standards of the organisation; even when off-duty; noting the additional responsibility such a senior position brings within a small Island community.
  • A proven track record in effective financial planning of budgets and delivery of ‘Value for Money’ service concepts and possession of a solid track record of effectively managing financial service delivery and reputational risk.
  • Be able to manage a budget of £10.4million within the delegated areas of responsibility.

The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract, up to 4 years’
  • Starting Salary £53,758 up to £59,604 per annum (depending on qualifications and experience) rising to £80,693 per annum.
  • Eligibility for 25% Gratuity (taxable), paid upon successful completion of the contract.
  • 41 days paid leave, 30 days paid annual leave plus 11 government and public holidays. Relocation Allowance, to help with moving costs
