We are seeking to appoint a part-time, School Nurse to join our Schools on a temporary basis from 22 August 2022 (or as soon after as possible) until 30 June 2023.

This is a temporary, part time position for 2 days per week; specifically on a Tuesday and a Thursday. The hours of work will be from 10:15am until 2:45pm on Tuesday, and from 10:15am until 2:30pm on Thursday, totalling a paid working week of 8.75 hours (term time only).

The salary range is £6,445.68 – £8,638.87 (pro rata) per annum, which is 21 to 29 on the ESMS Nurses scale, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

The closing date is 12pm on Monday, 1 August 2022. We anticipate interviews will take place week commencing 8 August 2022.

THE POST

Basic Function : The School Nurse will work alongside another School Nurse, as part of the team responsible for the Medical Department at Ravelston, covering The Mary Erskine School (MES) and the ESMS Junior School (Nursery – P3)

Accountability : The School Nurse will be accountable directly to the Nursing Supervisor

Authority : The School Nurse will have authority as delegated by the Nursing Supervisor and other promoted staff. They will liaise with the School Medical Officer

Relationships : The School Nurse works closely with the team of Nurses across all sites, School Medical Officer, Health and Safety Advisor and the School Counsellor. They will also liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including parents.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Care of children who become unwell or are injured during the school day.

• Care of pupils with ongoing medical needs (e.g. diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, etc.)

• Health screening by school entry questionnaire and testing of height/weight/visual activity/colour vision of all P1, new P2-3 pupils and boarders

• Communication with teaching and support staff including relevant members of school management in MES and ESMS Junior School, and any external bodies (e.g. school doctor)

• Liaison with Child Protection Co-ordinators, monitoring and support of children at risk

• Administration of medication as per NMC/RCN guidelines and school policy

• Provide information and advice to pupils, staff and parents on a range of health issues (e.g. mental, emotional, sexual, etc. health)

• Maintaining confidential medical records for individual children in line with NMC guidelines and school policy.

• Referring pupils to the school Counsellor/their General Practitioner/other agencies if required

• Provide first-aid advice to staff and pupils, and ensure that the appropriate medical kits are provided for out of school activities (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh, Carbisdale, school trips, etc.)

• Weekly checks of emergency defibrillators/asthma kits

• Assistance with immunisation programmes in collaboration with Lothian Health Board school vaccination team

• Teaching health education (e.g. first aid management) and sessions for Duke of Edinburgh

• Budgetary control: spending and ordering necessary equipment and medicines as required

PERSON SPECIFICATION

• Excellent communication and analytical skills with a commitment to delivering excellent customer service.

• Ability to multi-task and prioritise own workload with good attention to detail.

• Independent, self-motivated and organised; with an ability to work as part of a team.

• Ability to remain calm under pressure and follow procedures to ensure safety and well-being of pupils and colleagues.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Registered General Nurse (RGN) qualification is essential.

• Registered Children’s Nurse (RSCN) training is desirable.

• Experience of working in an education setting is desirable.

PROFESSIONAL REVIEW AND DEVELOPMENT

• Professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council

• Continuous professional development as required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Code of Conduct, including a minimum of 35 hours within a 3-year period.

Annual Leave: Annual leave will be a paid allowance in the annual salary as this is a term time only contract. All holidays will be taken during the school holidays

Location : The postholder will be based at Mary Erskine School at Ravelston

Eligibility : ESMS is unable to sponsor the employment of international workers in this role. International applicants will therefore be unable to apply for and secure a Skilled Worker visa. The successful candidate will only be able to take up this role if they can demonstrate an alternative right to work in the UK
