The role

The University of Bristol has invested significantly to enhance support for student wellbeing through the introduction of the Student Wellbeing Service which is now embedded across our academic schools. Five teams of Student Wellbeing Advisers proactively support student wellbeing through enhancing support for transition, fostering inclusive community building, developing wellbeing self-management skills, providing advice and support, and ensuring students with additional support needs are engaging with relevant support.

To ensure we are at full complement and to further expand our team we are recruiting five new Student Wellbeing Advisers.

Wellbeing Access is part of the Student Wellbeing Service and is the first point of contact for students seeking support for their mental health and wellbeing. Wellbeing Access was established in September 2019 and run by existing staff in addition to their duties. We are now investing in a new, dedicated team of managers and advisers to staff Wellbeing Access 9am – 8pm.

Internal appointments have been made and we now need to complete the team with one Student Wellbeing Access Adviser

 

What will you be doing?

Student Wellbeing Adviser role – Undertake student casework which can often be complex, high risk, time bound and psychologically challenging, working with the Student Wellbeing Manager where necessary to effectively manage risk. Coordinate support for individual students who are vulnerable or in crisis, in collaboration with colleagues across the University and external agencies. To provide responsive and time-bound support and advice to students on campus that ‘drop-in’ with a variety of queries and concerns and to plan and execute workshops with groups of students on wellbeing specific issues.

You will be an active member of your team, working alongside Adviser colleagues and a Student Wellbeing Manager to implement new and consistent wellbeing approaches.

Student Wellbeing Access Adviser role – The postholder will be expected to work 12pm–8pm to directly undertake complex, high risk, time bound and psychologically challenging casework with students, working with the Student Wellbeing Access Managers where necessary to manage risk. The Wellbeing Access team receive requests for support made by students, staff or external stakeholders. The team will review these, decide what actions to take while that case is held by Wellbeing Access before, if appropriate, arranging referral to one of the University’s support services or external partners. Furthermore, the post holder will provide responsive and time-bound support and advice to students on campus that ‘drop-in’ with a variety of queries and concerns.

  • You have experience of supporting clients/service users/students.
  • You are an excellent communicator and able to build relationships with people whom are seeking help.
  • You are able to maintain boundaries, exercise appropriate discretion and confidentiality, manage expectations, and negotiate solutions.
  • You have well-developed active listening skills and strong emotional intelligence
  • You work effectively autonomously, referring to more senior colleagues when required, whilst thriving in a busy team of people undertaking similar work.
