Course outline

Delivered jointly by Louise Howel, Head of HIEDA, and Vanessa Entwistle, School nurse, Wycliffe College, this course is aimed at Health professionals and pastoral staff who work with young people to support and manage their skin conditions. Both Louise and Vanessa are experienced Independent School nurses and Vanessa has experience as a Dermatology specialist nurse within Gloucestershire Hospital NHS foundation trust.  This webinar will equip delegates with the knowledge and skills required to spot red flags of deteriorating skin conditions, manage and support young people with the treatment of common skin conditions and understand how skin conditions can have a psychological impact on a young person.

Training topics will include:

  • Focus on common inflammatory skin conditions i.e. eczema, acne, psoriasis
  • Red flags of deteriorating skin conditions
  • Practical demonstration and practise on medication management and application
  • Tips for implementing effective and evidence-based care plan’s
  • Skin medication tick charts for school environments
  • Importance of a multi professional approach in effective management
  • Psychological impact of skin conditions

Learning outcomes:

  • Recognise the importance and priority of managing young people’s skin conditions within school environment
  • Understand medications and how to use effectively
  • Be able to implement evidence-based care plans around skin condition management in school environment
  • Recognise and monitor for psychological impact of skin conditions in young people.

Louise Howel, Head of HIEDA

Louise Howel is a paediatric nurse with experience in children’s A & E, plastics and respiratory care. Health visitor for ten years.  Nine years experience in independent school nursing working in a mix of boarding and day school settings. Six years experience as Health centre manager most recently at Wycliffe College.
