Course outline

Delivered by Vanessa Entwistle, School nurse in Independent school sector this course is aimed at Health professionals and pastoral staff who work with young people to support and manage their skin conditions. Both Louise and Vanessa are experienced Independent School nurses and Vanessa has experience as a Dermatology specialist nurse within Gloucestershire Hospital NHS foundation trust.  This webinar will equip delegates with the knowledge and skills required to spot red flags of deteriorating skin conditions, manage and support young people with the treatment of common skin conditions and understand how skin conditions can have a psychological impact on a young person.

Training topics will include:

  • Assessment of common inflammatory skin conditions – eczema, psoriasis and acne.
  • Early recognition of red flags, identifying deteriorating skin conditions and infections.
  • Topical therapies including practical demonstrations, management and application.
  • Top tips for implementing effective and evidence-based care plans.
  • Sunscreens in a school setting.
  • Importance of multi-disciplinary approach in effective management of skin conditions within a school setting.
  • Psychosocial impact of skin conditions and the role of the school nurse.

Learning outcomes:

  • Recognise the importance and priority of managing young people’s skin conditions within school environment
  • Understand medications and how to use effectively
  • Be able to implement evidence-based care plans around skin condition management in school environment
  • Recognise and monitor for psychological impact of skin conditions in young people.

Vanessa entwistle BSc (Hons) Childrens Nursing, SCPH Public Health, Member of NMC and RCN

Vanessa has extensive paediatric nursing experience, starting her career as a paediatric nurse in Gloucester in 2004.

In a career spanning over a decade  ,Vanessa has experience in a range of paediatric settings including a private school, acute paediatrics, and taking on leadership roles as a lead nurse for a home treatment team for children with chronic and enduring eating disorders .

Vanessa is a registered Specialist Practitioner in Public Heath – Health Visitor and an independent Prescriber.

As a specialist dermatology nurse Vanessa  provided independent nurse-led clinics for dermatology a role which involved working across the boundaries of paediatric and adolescent care spanning over primary, intermediate and secondary care services.

Vanessa continually strives to offer the best evidence-based practice to Children and young people (CYP) their families, ensuring the voice of the CYP is always heard.
