First Aid for Mental Health (2 day)

Audience

Anyone who has an interest in becoming a first aider for mental health. 

Anyone who has a responsibility for mental health in the workplace (including mental health lead). 

Course outline

Mental Health First Aiders need to have: 

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing 
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues 
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress 
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening 
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix. 

This course explores ‘normal’ mental health and when normal becomes unhealthy.  It gives the holder an in-depth knowledge of the complexities behind management and diagnosis. It helps the holder identify what could be done in the workplace to prevent mental health issues develop and how to support those returning to work after a period of illness.  

This detailed course enhances skills and helps delegates gain confidence when supporting others. 

Training topics will include: 

  • Normal mental health 
  • When normal becomes abnormal 
  •  Healthy and unhealthy coping strategies 
  • Creating a mentally healthier workplace
  • Self-care.

Kayleigh Loffhagen, National Trainer and Associate on behalf of MHFA England CIC

Kayleigh has over two decades of experience working across a variety of mental health settings, including publishing research with Oxford and Cambridge Universities; psychological and psychiatric nursing roles within inpatient forensic mental health services; third sector roles in the areas of suicide support and community engagement; and public health promotion within the NHS and local authority.

Kayleigh trained as an MHFA instructor in 2014 to complement the array of bespoke mental health and wellbeing, physical health, and public health training packages she is experienced in developing and facilitating. Kayleigh is currently an MHFA trainer for Harmless CIC, and also delivers MHFA on a freelance basis for a wide variety of other clients across corporate, third sector and government settings. Kayleigh became a National Trainer with MHFA England in 2017.
